We are living through an age of gaslighting and deflection. Do not let it drain you. Attention spent arguing with nonsense is attention taken away from your own game.
This applies to everyone. Business owners, employees, customers and people simply attempting to understand what is happening around them are being asked to process more claims, predictions and manufactured certainty than ever before.
Attention has become too expensive to give away carelessly.
The Future Is Not Offering Refunds
Businesses need to think about the future. The problem begins when thinking turns into pretending we can predict it.
A strategy can prepare for several possibilities. A gamble requires one prediction to be right.
Nobody knows exactly where technology, markets, politics or customer behavior will go next. Yet people continue presenting speculation as certainty, then deflecting when reality declines to cooperate.
Trying to understand the future is useful. Building your entire identity, business or emotional stability around one version of it is considerably less so.
Do Not Let Deflection Choose Your Priorities
Gaslighting and deflection work by making you spend your time proving what you already know, defending what you did not say or responding to an argument that was never the real issue.
Occasionally, a response is necessary. Often, the distraction is the point.
Every hour spent chasing somebody else’s moving explanation is an hour not spent making a decision, building something, helping someone or paying attention to the parts of life that actually belong to you.
You do not need to win every argument. You need to recognize which ones are taking you away from your work.
Time Is the Real Cost
Attention feels renewable because tomorrow brings another day.
Time is not.
You never receive more of it, and you do not know how much you have left. That makes attention one of the most expensive things you possess.
Spend some of it understanding what may happen next. Keep enough of it for what is happening now.
The future deserves consideration.
It does not deserve your entire life.
